The Blue Shift and the Red Mirage

Half of this Country will think Mail ballots will have stolen this election by the end of today.

The Blue Shift and the Red Mirage, as they are being called, will have profound impacts on public perception. The Qanon believers will point to this election as proof that the election was stolen by the “deep state.” While Democrats are likely to think mail ballots saved Democracy from a pandemic.

And at the end of the day we won’t fix our broken voting system.

______________

Well, well, well. 2020 hinges on Absentee Ballots. Who could have ever guessed this would be a problem? Specifically… a problem for Democrats.

For Democrats, the time shifting that occurs in elections is really problematic. For if everyone votes Red on Election Day and Blue by Mail, then the narrative becomes…

“They’re stealing the election… with their crooked absentee ballots.”

The narrative also becomes, “Who is ahead?” and the media loves a horse race.

But the only person ahead at any point along the way is the person who eventually has the most votes. So the horse race is an illusion created by the media. No one is ahead until all the legal votes cast have been counted.

And the side that’s screaming to stop counting votes, well, they are the people trying to rig the election by not counting all legally cast absentee and mail ballots.

After running The No Vote By Mail Project as a part-time hobby for 16 years, I have found a long list of problems with mail voting. However, even then, this election surprised me.

The dismantling of high-speed mail sorting machines is perhaps the most brilliant trick of the Trump team. I can’t find a law against it. While it highlighted a problem with mail voting I had never before considered, that the United States Postal Service is part of the Executive Branch. When you place voting under the thumb of the executive branch, via the post office, the PEOPLE no longer control their voting systems.

According to the NYT about 75% of Americans had access to mail voting this year. Because of that, this means we will in the end have no true idea who tried to vote by mail and didn’t have their vote count.  There is no way to currently find this number. I certainly don’t have the money to poll and research the subject. So the only final metric is the number of ballots received at the end of the line. And that, at the end of the day, week or month of vote counting, is the legal metric.

However, the system isn’t precise enough to accurately count 150,000,000 votes on-time in a uniform manner. Or even 100 million votes. Or even 5 Million Votes. And as the 2nd section of this series points out, each state counts ballots differently. Especially mail ballots.

The media and voters seem to be learning all the wrong lessons so far about mail voting. The Democrats are perhaps the most behind of all on the learning curve here. Especially with how badly mail ballots are hurting them so far.

My final conclusion about vote-by-mail, voting in America, and the problems we face always comes back to the same solutions Andy Stephenson and I talked about going on 16 years ago now.

1. Hand Counted Paper Ballots, Cast and Counted at the Precincts.

2. Publicly Owned Open Sourced Software with Optical Scan type machines with no internet connections

3. Random mandatory hand audits

4. Kick Corporations out of the vote-counting or ballot handling or computer software systems

5. Drop-off Absentee Ballots are fine, but early voting centers are better

6. Early voting centers with drop-off absentee ballots rather than “mail” ballots, don’t time shift the election, with a Red-Shift Early and a Blue Shift later.

And on this last point. If Democrats fail to recognize the red-shift blue-shift problem in this election, where the pandemic made it AMAZINGLY obvious, I really don’t know how to yell about it any louder.

Hopefully in the next 4 years we will get a chance to address myriad problems in our voting system. I am hopeful today that the Blue Shift overcomes the Red Mirage, lol, but I am not hopeful with the likes of Chris Dodd on Biden’s transition team. If anyone should stay the hell away from our voting systems, it’s that guy.

Thanks for reading. If you made it this far. Good Luck America.
